The Blue Print
Follow these 10 steps and you will gain a job in the next 30 days guaranteed. But remember you must follow these steps exactly. If you miss just one step you run the risk of not gaining the job you want.
1) Decide on exactly what kind of work your seeking.
Decide which kind of oil industry position you would like to find. Which area of work are you looking for?
Labor
Technical
Office / Administrative
Trades
Professional
Managerial
Driving / Operating
It could be one of the above or some other you have in mind. But get focused.
2) Set a deadline for achieving this goal:
The reason it is important to set a deadline is because it will motivate you to do whatever it takes to achieve your goal by that date. Think about it like this. For some of you just getting starting and earning a good income will be motivation enough. For others, it will be the challenge of gaining the rewarding career position you're seeking. Whichever the case keep focused on a time frame in which you want to be employed.
3) Identify what skills talents and abilities you have to offer:
Currently you possess certain talents and abilities that would be of value to the oil and gas industry. By identifying
these talents you can gain a better sense of how to market yourself to employers.
I) What is the number one work skill your good at doing?
II) What trade or technical skills do you possess?
III) Are you good at working with others or do you prefer working alone?
IV) What personal characteristics make you especially qualified for working in the oil industry? (ie: can work long hours)
V) Do you possess any training or education that could be of value to an oil industry position?
VI) Are you particularly good at managing others or do you work better as a follower?
VII) Are you particularly mechanically inclined?
VIII) Do you have your own vehicle and or any other form of specialized driving skills?
IX) Do you possess the ability to work in isolated rural areas?
X) What work related experience do you have that could be valuable to working in the oil industry.
Answering these questions will help you gain a better sense of the skills you have to offer.
4) Use the skills you've identified to sharpen your resume
Your resume and cover letter is usually one of the first impressions you make on a prospective employer. Because of this, you must be sure that your cover letter gains the readers attention and your resume causes them to want to interview you.
Your cover letter is the most important part of your resume because it is usually the first piece of information about you that is read by the employer. Your cover letter should begin with an attention grabbing lead off paragraph, moving into an interest retaining body paragraph, and finally into a closing paragraph that offers a taste of more to come. Use your cover letter as a way to sell your talents, skills, and experience to the employer. Your cover letter should not only relay the features of your skills but also the benefits that your employer will gain from them. Always keep your cover letter to a maximum of one page.
Your resume should not be more than 2-3 pages in length, even if that means not including all the information you would like. Employers are usually very busy and don't spend a great deal of time looking over your resume. In most cases employers will read less than 25% of your resume. They usually will glance at your opening, your previous work experience, education and other interesting facts so you must gain their attention right away in order to gain a chance at securing an interveiw.
There are many books that focus entirely on how to write cover letters and resumes. Also for a fee we can send your resume out to several thousand employers once you've completed it. Here are a few things to remember:
Less than 20/20 Test: A person with 20/20 vision can read your print size but make sure your print is large enough to be read by people wearing glasses or with less than perfect vision. Larger print is easier for the prospective employer to read. Try using a 10-12 letter font even on the body. Smaller is often too small and anything larger is unattractive.
Short to the point statements: Make sure any statements you make in your resume are short and to the point. Don't give long detailed descriptions of what you did at past jobs or in any other particular statements you might make. Employers will ask for more detail during an interview if necessary. You want to make every point like your reading a "table of contents in a book" short concise and easy to scan through.
Customize: If you have a computer or access to a computer it is good to use, or learn to use, the word processing software. Not only are computers becoming more and more mandatory in the work world, but it will allow you to customize your work skills and abilities to the specific job requirements and duties required by an employer. Your resume should be tailored to suit each job ad, posting, or company, like a finely tailored suit. An easy way to do this is by looking at the job opening and recognizing what kinds of skills and duties are required for it. Once you've identified the most important duties required, you can adapt your resume to suit these requirements easy and quickly on a computers word processor.
If you are having problems with writing a good cover letter or resume there are tons of books you can get at any library which focus specifically on writing them. We at www.oilcareer.com can also email your resume to several thousand employers after you have completed it.
5) Make at least 5 contacts per day
You must make at least five contacts per day. In the back of this book I provide company directories that you can find in any main urban library. I also provide names of magazines, newsletters, and websites that you can use as an endless source of job leads.
The contacts you make could be in the form of telephone calls, faxes, letters, drop offs or any other method. We also provide a way to make contact with employers. For a fee we can email your resume to several thousand oil companies. These contacts are the most important determining factor of you finding employment. The more contacts you make the more likely you are, and sooner you are, to find a job.
Phone: When making any contact by phone, a great deal of the time you will end up first talking with someone who isn't in the position to provide you with the information you're seeking. What you want to do is make sure you ask to be directed to the person who handles to the human resources responsibilities within the company. Once your on the phone with someone who can give you the right information then you can ask them about any openings or inquire about specific job leads. If by chance there are no openings, ask if they know if any might be opening up in the near future. Also ask if they know of any other companies that are hiring. Every call might not turn up job openings, but they can at least point you to other companies that quit possibly are hiring. Remember these contacts are critical so get prepared before you call. Write down a few footnotes before you make the call.
When you do make your calls remember to:
· Bypass the people who are just administrative staff and get directed
to the person who can give you the information you need.
· Ask specific questions about the job such as:
Pay, starting times, place, hours, fax number, names, addresses, requirements etc.
· Ask for referrals of other companies that might be hiring
You may not understand how to use a fax machine, computer or anything else, but you know how to use the phone so make sure to turn it into one of your most powerful assets in finding a job.
FAX: Fax machines are easy to operate and they can be one of your greatest ways to get your resume into the hands of the employer. Maybe you've heard that you need to bring resumes to an employer in person. FORGET IT! You want to use your time in the most efficient and effective manner possible. A fax machine can help you greatly by saving you large amounts of valuable time that is often wasted in mailing, or even dropping off resumes. Rarely do employers see people who are there dropping off resumes. In most cases they get the resume from the secretary, they look it over and then they contact you to learn more about you and or schedule an interview with you. If you've never used a fax machine then you need to learn how. They're like using your microwave, put the item inside like so and then press a few buttons and you're done. Just ask someone to show you if you don't know. If you don't have a fax machine of your own ask around. Many government employment centers have free ones available for you to use. Maybe a friend or relative has one available.
Oil Career Services: If you don't want to mess around and want to find a job right away then another approach is to try our resume distribution services. It is so important for you to get your resume out on a massive scale. However the cost of sending out your resume can become expensive. Even if you have you're own fax machine and are willing to take the time to look up company phone numbers then you still are going to rack up long distance charges, not to mention the tremendous time and energy it takes to look up specific oil company fax numbers. We offer the most cost effective way for you to get your resume to thousands of oil companies. We can get your resume out at just 12 cents per resume sent, making it the most affordable way to reach the largest audiance of oil industry employers available. To learn more visit: www.oilcareer.com
Internet: There are tons of job posting on the internet that you can easily apply to. Even if you've never used a computer in your life you can quickly learn how to respond to these job posting. I share with you a number of information packed websites later on that offer many North American oil and gas job leads. The internet offers you the ability to respond to these job postings in several ways. Some ads have phone, and fax numbers. Others have email addresses you can respond to. Getting set up to get and send email is very easy as well. Just ask someone who has been on the internet for a little while and they will show you. You can also use the internet in many cases to post your resume to show prospective employers who are also online. This is an easy and effective way to get the word out that you looking for an opening.
Later on I share tons of places to gain contact information of employers who are looking for people just like you to help them.
6) Follow up on every contact made
You need to prepare a list of the contacts you have made each day. Make sure when you make any contact you remember to record, or ask for the:
· Company Name
· Names of the person or persons you talked with (first and last names if possible)
· Company address
· Company fax and phone number
· Date and time of contact
· Referral companies information as above
This information is very important and needs to be recorded every time you make a contact. It is vital for when
you make a follow up on a resume you sent in, or an interview you had. Simply writing down a name or number could
mean the difference between getting hired or not. For instance if your dealing with a large company and you happen
to do a follow up but don't have the name of the person you talked with recorded, it makes it difficult for the
secretary to direct you to that person. Also it gives the employer an impression that you are disorganized, which
you want to avoid at all cost.
7) Make job hunting easy by using the power of technology
Making your five contacts each day will be easy when you begin using the phone, faxes and computers. North American
is a big place and many oil and gas companies are located in small towns or other cities. You can however easily
make contact with these places. First, by making phone calls to see if the employer has openings. And second by
using a fax machine to send your resume to them. Even within city limits you don't want to have to be driving around
the city all day dropping off resumes, wasting time, and money when you could be making more contacts by the phone.
Remember the more contacts you make the more likely you are to gain interviews and finally a good job.
Computers and the internet can be a very powerful tool in helping you find a job. As I mentioned before I have included a number of websites for you to look through which contain job postings by prospective employers. Also if you would like to use the internet to help you find a job here are a few things to consider.
· You can post your resume online at many job hunting websites for prospective employers to see.
· Emailing employers online is a quick way to make contacts with them; you can also email them your resume.
· You can browse job posting placed on the internet
. If you're in a hurry to find a job we can send out your resume to several thousand oil industry employers for the lowest price available anywhere. For details visit: www.oilcareer.com
Technology is advancing at an enormous pace. And making it your friend can make your job finding efforts easier than you ever thought possible.
8) Practice handling the interview process
What you'll find is that every employer has a different style of interviewing. Some employers will give you the third degree, while some will just have a friendly conversation with you. Here is a little psychological technique that always will help you adapt to the style of interview being conducted. All you need to realize is that the art of rapport involves imitation. Employers are just people and they want to hire people not only who are qualified, but many of times they will hire someone who they simply "Like" before anyone else. So the trick here is to imitate their style. You don't have to be anyone your not but simply try to show the employer that you're their kind of employee. You can show them this in the way you act, speak, and behave. This will get the employer thinking "hey their my kind of man or woman!" So for instance, if the employer is loud and tries to give you the third degree, simply imitate them, be LOUD TOO, and just as overbearing as he or she is. If the employer is friendly and likes conversation, then talk to him or her with a smile like you're talking to an old high school buddy. The same holds true for any style of employer you happen to get interviewed by.
You've heard all the common interview skills such as:
· The night before, practice scenarios of handling possible interview questions that might be asked by the employer.
· Go over your resume so that you have names, companies, dates, and other information memorized
· Dress neat and appropriate for the interview based on the type of position your going for. The 12 inches above your shoulders should be neat and well groomed. Hygiene is also very important.
· Leave for the interview to arrive at least 20 minutes early, just in case of the unexpected happening like getting a flat tire on the way.
· Bring an extra resume, pen, references and any other information necessary for the interview
· Speak clearly with short concise replies to the interviewers questions
· Gain the interviewers business card or name and number for your follow up.
Now here are a few techniques, that when used can really help you pass any interview.
· When you meet the interviewer only shake there hand if it is offered to you. Some people don't shake hands so it is better to have them offer first.
· Don't immediately sit down. Wait until the employer asks you to, or ask to be seated. Remember the interviewer is watching every slight action you make.
· When you sit down, sit up straight and lean forward just slightly toward the employer.
· Make strong eye contact with the interviewer. Don't make it so obvious that your staring though, look away ever 15 to 30 seconds. But when you talk to them look them in the eye. This conveys honesty.
· Seem enthusiastic, but remember to match the interviewers style of behavior. You don't want to act like you had too much coffee before the interview if the interviewer is calm and laidback.
· When you address the employer use their name. For instance if the interviewers name is John:
"You know John I have….
"I'm glad you asked John because…..
"Well John, I have….
This technique is sometimes difficult for someone who isn't use to it. Remember you don't have to use it every single time but try and use it often enough, but try to make the use of it sound as sincere and natural as humanly possible.
. Another technique is to simply try to put yourself in the employers shoes. More than anything the employer wants to find someone who is ready, able and willing to work. They don't want someone who just wants to show up to watch the clock and pick up their paycheck at the end of the week. They want someone who will honestly go the extra mile, someone who can take inititive and get the job done right the first time. And if they could find a person like that they would hire them in an instant! The following is a technique that is unconventional but works.
· This technique might seem unheard of but it works. During the course of the interview, tell the employer that you would even be willing to work the first 2 weeks for free, after that time they can keep you on at regular pay or if their not happy they can let you go! I know it might sound crazy, but by doing this you're offering "risk reversal" and now the employer has nothing to lose by hiring you. Employers spend a great deal of time and money during the first 6 months to a year in training on a new employee. If you can offer them a way to see how you do before making any commitment, they will be very interested in working something out. Remember, no employer in the world will hire you to just get the free 2 weeks work and then fire you. They want to see if you're for real, and many of times when you make such a bold offer they will hire you at full pay from the start anyway, or after the first 2 weeks they will pay you for working anyway. It's a powerful technique that would truly make you stand out from the rest.
The way to offer your services at no charge for a few weeks is by using the word "volunteering". So you might say: "I'd be glad to volunteer my services for a few weeks, even without pay to show you I can satisfy the requirements your looking for, then after the first two weeks is up and you've had a chance to see just how qualified I am, you can decide if you want to take me on full time."
· After the interview there is one thing you must do. Follow up with a thank you card or letter. A short letter might be more appropriate for male interviewers while a card more appropriate for female interviewers. Use the card or letter as a way remind them of why you are a good candidate for the position. Remind them that you are so interested in there company and position that you would even be willing to volunteer your services for the first few weeks.
9) Don't quit looking until you've found a position
Remember that your future is what you make it. Nobody is going to give you anything on a silver platter. You have to get out there and take what you want. So don't wallow in worry or self-pity. You have tremendous skills and determination that you now will be even better equipped to use to find the job you're seeking. Keep making five contacts every day. That means five phone calls and or resumes sent out each day. In a course of one month (20 business days) that equals 100 contacts made. And if you get referrals of other employers from each initial contact, that could be another 100 contacts made. In no time if you follow these 10 easy steps you will have gained the job you're seeking. Read through this formula several times. And remember to use the pages in the back of this book to write down your contacts, follow-ups, and any other notes and information necessary. You need to be keeping records each day to keep organized, remember that. Keep this booklet handy in your car, on the way to an interview, at your desk, or anywhere where you can write down the contacts you make each day in your job search process.
10) Learn to manage the position once you've found it
Usually when someone begins a new position it can be difficult to make the adjustment. Just remember that as you continue to keep working each day, the job will continue to get easier and easier. Make it a habit to show up at least 20 minutes early each day. You definitely do not want to be coming in exactly at the time when the shift is to start because it usually takes a good 10 minutes to get ready to go. Try to be at your best by showing others confidence, friendliness and a positive attitude. This will show your employer and fellow employees that you're approachable, easy to work with, and have what it takes to become one of the team. Try not to complain at all about problems, but if they need to be addressed tell them directly and only to the person who can handle them. Try to be a model employee and you'll gain higher wage increases, greater benefits and more opportunity out of the position. The level of quality and value you bring to the company, that same level will be returned to you. Be open to taking on extra duties, doing overtime, staying late or whatever it takes to get the job done. Don't see it as a burden but as a challenge that will enhance your current skills and abilities as a valuable employee. Set a goal to become a true team player within the company, soon you'll be so valuable to the company that they'll go the extra mile to keep you happy and with them. In no time you will undoubtedly begin to see the financial rewards of your hard work and perseverance. Remember all you need is that one job and your whole future could turn around for the better and you're just one more step away from finding that position.

Section II -- Additional Instructions
1) Set a goal: "because if you don't know where you want to go, you probably won't get there."
Decide which kind of position you would like to find. Which area of work are you looking for?
Labor
Technical
Office / Administrative
Trades
Professional
Managerial
Driving / Operating
I am seeking employment in the oil field in the sector of
___________. I will have found a position in this sector by
___/___/___ (date).
2) Take Control.
Many people would tend to believe that people somehow land high paying jobs because they are somehow luckier than
others. This is simply not true. The people who have found high paying oil industry jobs simply have taken the
action necessary to find those jobs. They didn't sit around hoping that someone would hire them. They went searching
for that new job day in and day out until they got hired. The more you recognize that you are in control of your
life and future, the more likely you are to take the actions necessary to produce the results you want in your
life. You and only you are responsible for gaining that high paying job. Remember, all you need is that one job
to turn your whole life around for the better. Why not go on an all out search and do whatever it takes to get
your foot in the door. That means, getting your resume professionally developed, using your distribution system
to get it into the hands of employers, then doing follow ups as well as continuing to make daily contacts, until
you get hired. When you take control of your situation to such an extreme the doorways will start to open for you
with astounding felocity.
3) What do you have in your favor right now?
I) You have the realization that far more people are employed right now in the oil and gas industry than people
who want to be employed in it. So you realized that it isn't as hard as you may think to get a job in the oil industry
because if many others have found exciting high paying jobs so can you.
II) You also realize that you have a great deal of value to offer companies who are interested in hiring someone.
The abilities you've gained from past employment, your desire to work, and your belief that you have a great deal
to contribute especially qualifies you as a person who is highly likely to get hired before someone without these
qualifications.
III) You have this blueprint to getting you pointed in the right direction in finding the job you want.
4) You're Ahead of your competition
Your competition is largely made up of people who are just trying to find whatever they happen to come across. They aren't focused like you are in finding a job in the oil and gas industry. Because the oil and gas industry does little advertising is mass media's so your competition is a lot less likely to look for employment in the places that you're totally focused on. So don't worry about competition because there isn't as much competition who are as focused as you are.
5) Learn to sell yourself
You have a great deal of valuable skills, talents, and abilities that you have to offer the oil and gas industry. Part of finding a job is learning to tell employers that you have these skills, and helping them to realize what a great asset you would be to their company.
You need to understand that the skills you have are just your features and they will not necessarily get you a job. What an employer wants to know is what benefits these features can offer him or her.
The most important part of selling yourself is getting the word out there that you are looking for a job. Let people know, ask people, search the list of websites offered in this booklet, read newspaper want ads, contact companies, and get allow us to get your resume out there.
6) It's easier for companies to hire from within so get within.
Companies tend to promote from within there own ranks. Because of this, you want to try and get into the company even if that means taking a lower position that you originally desired. By doing so, you will be well on your way to moving up the ladder of achievement in the company. Try to do whatever job you're offered to the best of your ability and soon your work will get noticed. Make it known to the employer that although you will continue working hard at your present position, you believe that your skills would be better suited for the position you desire and let them know why. People are constantly changing jobs, retiring, moving, and there are an endless amount of reasons that the position you desire could open up in the near future. By getting within the company you are positioning yourself to move up in the company.
7) Research the company so you know what you're getting into
Researching the top 10 companies that you would like to work for is an excellent way of giving yourself the direction you need right now. Discover which companies offer the kind of incentives you want. This also weeds out the companies that don't offer the kind of advancement, training, or pay your seeking. You can gain important information about companies in a number of different ways.
· Interview past employees
· Call the company and ask them questions
· Ask them to send you materials about there company
· Visit the library and look up information that might be available
· Go on the internet and do some searches for information on that company
· Contact affiliated companies that work closely with that company to gain information
8) If asked about salary, provide a salary range.
Tell them that your would like to start between $x and $x amount of dollars. Ask them what the average starting wage is for the position. Always try to give a higher number than lower, since you can always negotiate down but if your too low they might take advantage of it.
9) Avoid going through a Temporary Help agency.
Temporary agencies get paid a percentage of the salary you will be earning directly from the employer. Many times it averages 20% of wages you normally could be putting in your own pocket. These agencies also don't always have any permanent positions available, but rather just temporary openings so you never get an honest chance with a company. Use a temp agency as a very last resort and never pay any up front fees if they require them.
10) The quicker you get the word "No" the faster you'll gain a "yes"
It is inevitable that you will be faced with rejection; over the phone, during interviews, by mail and so forth. But the way in which you see this rejection could be a great motivation to getting a job. What you should do is whenever you get a "no" simply make a note of it. Continue to drive to 100 no's as fast a possible and you will certainly gain that one "yes." Don't look at a "no" as a discouragement but rather think of it as being just one more step closer to finding someone who will say yes.
